Numerical study of tokamak equilibria with arbitrary flow

چکیده
The effects of toroidal and poloidal flows on the equilibrium of tokamak plasmas are numerically investigated using the code FLOW. The code is used to determine the changes in the profiles induced by large toroidal flows on NSTX-like equilibria @with NSTX being the National Spherical Torus Experiment, M. Ono, S.M. Kaye, Y.-K.M. Peng et al., Nucl. Fusion 40, 557 ~2000!# where flows exceeding the sound speed lead to a considerable outward shift of the plasma. The code is also used to study the effects of poloidal flow when the flow velocity profile varies from subsonic to supersonic with respect to the poloidal sound speed. It is found that pressure and density profiles develop a pedestal structure characterized by radial discontinuities at the transonic surface where the poloidal velocity abruptly jumps from subsonic to supersonic values. These results confirm the conclusions of the analytic theory of R. Betti and J. P. Freidberg @Phys. Plasmas 7, 2439 ~2000!#, derived for a low-b, large aspect ratio tokamak with a circular cross section. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1637918#

Equilibrium and Stability of Tokamak Plasmas with Arbitrary Flow by Luca
The purpose of the present work is the analysis of equilibrium and stability properties of tokamak plasmas in the presence of macroscopic flow. First, the formulation of the equilibrium problem is reviewed. Toroidal flow produces a modification in the equilibrium profile due to the centrifugal force produced by the rotation in curved geometry. The effects of poloidal rotation are more surprisin...
متن کاملTokamaks with Reversed Current Density: Stability of Equilibria with Axisymmetric Islands
Tokamak regimes with nearly zero or negative toroidal current in the central region (current hole) feature good plasma confinement properties and may be naturally attained in the advanced tokamak (AT) regime. On the other hand, quasi-steady-state AC plasma current operation in tokamaks relies upon the existence of current reversal equilibria with zero net toroidal current. In both cases a syste...
متن کاملNumerical Solution of Reacting Laminar Flow Heat and Mass Transfer in Ducts of Arbitrary Cross-Sections for Newtonian and Non-Newtonian Fluids
This study is concerned with the numerical analysis, formulation, programming and computation of steady, 3D conservation equations of reacting laminar flow heat and mass transfer in ducts of arbitrary cross-sections. The non-orthogonal boundary-fitted coordinate transformation method is applied to the Cartesian form of overall-continuity, momenta, energy and species-continuity equations, parabo...
متن کاملMulti-Region Approach to Free-Boundary 3D Tokamak Equilibria and Resistive Wall Instabilities
Free-boundary 3D tokamak equilibria and resistive wall instabilities are calculated using a new resistive wall model in the two-fluid M3D-C1 code. In this model, the resistive wall and surrounding vacuum region are included within the computational domain. This implementation contrasts with the method typically used in fluid codes in which the resistive wall is treated as a boundary condition o...
متن کاملMagnetohydrodynamics equilibria with toroidal and poloidal flow
In the present work, the effects of flow on tokamak equilibria are investigated, focusing in particular on the effects of poloidal flows. It is shown that discountinuous transonic equilibria with a pedestal structure can be obtained for relatively low values of the poloidal velocity. Equilibria with poloidal flow of the order of the poloidal Alfvén speed are shown to develop inverted Shafranov ...
